New marketing tool from Google

Google presented a  new tool a couple of days ago: Google Insights for Search. At a first glance it looks a bit like a cross between Google Trends and the Google Keyword Tool.

It offers filtering the results using a date range, topic (category) or region. Results are neatly displayed on map so you can quickly see where your target audience might be. You also get to see related search terms and a list of search terms called 'rising searches'. These are the ones you might keep your eye on.

So how would you use this tool for Search Enginge Optimization? Webanalisten.nl wrote an article (in dutch) with an example for a flourist. But I think this tool also is very useful as a market survey tool, which can be used reports like the one on open source content management systems.

I looked at the 3 popular systems from the report - Drupal, Joomla and Wordpress - to see what results I get from Insights. Region used is the United States (I would like to use Europe but that's not possible - region selections are worldwide or on a country-level), category is 'webdesign and development' and time range last 12 months.

To see the relative growth, I switched the results from 'Interest level' to 'Growth relative to category'. The results show all three system show growing interest, but the growth is stable for Joomla. Drupal and Wordpress are rising.
